public safety

Like a small city, the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) has its own police and fire departments with highly trained public safety staff responsible for ensuring the safety and security of its "citizens."

Airport Police Department

Officer on bike patrolAirport Police officers, licensed by the Minnesota Peace Officers Standards and Training Board, patrol the entire MSP campus, including the highways surrounding the airport, parking ramps, terminal buildings, roadways, and curbside area. The Airport Police Department (APD) is made up of four divisions: Administrative, Investigations, Patrol, and Aviation Security. Chief Mark Rosenow oversees a staff of 150 employees.

Curbside Security

Curbside security is a major concern of the APD. Community Service Officers are on-duty around the clock patrolling in front of the terminal buildings. Due to federal regulations, parking is not allowed curbside; it is a loading/unloading zone only. The alternatives to waiting curbside are to park in the short-term parking lot, or wait in the Cell Phone Lot located off of Highway 5 and Post Road until your party is ready to be picked up.

The APD is committed to providing good customer service while enforcing federal security regulations. Please contact us at apd@mspmac.org or 612-726-5547 should you have any questions or comments regarding curbside security procedures or policies.

Tips for picking up and dropping off passengers at MSP can be found under the Directions section.

Emergencies

In an emergency, call 9-1-1 from any airport pay phone, or your cell phone if you are in the terminal area. You may also contact them by dialing 228 from the Airport Assistance Phones located throughout the terminal or by dialing 612-726-5577 from any phone.

Police Station Locations

The Airport Police Operations Center is located in the public area of Terminal 1-Lindbergh on the Baggage Claim Level near Door 1. Terminal 2-Humphrey also has a small police office between the ticketing and baggage claim areas on Level 1.

Airport Badging Office

The Badging Office, located on Level 5 between the Red & Blue Parking Ramps at Terminal 1-Lindbergh, is managed under the APD's Aviation Security division, and provides badging services to thousands of employees and vendors at MSP.

Airport Fire and Emergency Dispatch

The Airport Fire Department operates out of two fire stations on the MSP campus to enable the staff to respond quickly to emergency events.

The Airport Fire Department can be contacted through the Emergency Communications Center by dialing 9-1-1 from any airport pay phone, 228 from an Airport Assistance phone, or 612-726-5577.

Along with providing 24-hour onsite service the fire department also oversees the Automatic External Defibrillators (AED) program at MSP. AED’s are located throughout both terminals for use by airport employees and the public in case of sudden cardiac arrest. The AED’s are typically located near Airport Assistance phones to enable someone to easily call for emergency assistance.
